PneuBots: A Modular Soft Robotics Construction Kit

Exploring the World of Soft Robotics in a Playful Way

Soft robotics is an emerging field with a high potential for impact, particularly in the realms of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Haptic technology. However, the barriers to entry for most makers, especially those without technical backgrounds, can be daunting. That's where PneuBots comes in—a modular soft robotics construction kit designed to reduce these barriers and enable anyone to explore the fascinating world of soft robotics.

PneuBots, created by designer Hye Jun Youn, is a unique and innovative construction kit that allows creators to build and experiment with various soft robotics assemblies. The kit consists of seven types of self-foldable, quasi-inextensible segments, three types of pneumatic connectors and splitters, and a custom-designed box. With these modular pieces, users can easily create different shapes and structures, opening up endless possibilities for artistic expression and interactive experiences.

What sets PneuBots apart is its user-friendly fabrication process. The modules are developed using a heat-pressing technique, where two layers of PVC film are sealed along origami-inspired patterns. This method ensures accurate and smooth geometric patterns without any wrinkles. Each module features one to five pneumatic ports with oral-inflation valves, allowing for easy inflation and deflation. The modules can be connected using the three types of pneumatic connectors: Straight-shaped, T-shaped, and Cross-shaped.

One of the key strengths of PneuBots is its programmability. The modules are designed with different actuation patterns, including shrinking, curling, and bending. By combining these modules in various ways, users can create dynamic, shape-changing, and interactive works. Whether it's for education, storytelling, or dynamic art, PneuBots offers seamless programmability and endless creative possibilities.

The PneuBots construction kit comes in a compact and stylish toolkit box, measuring 200 mm x 70 mm x 100 mm. This portable design allows users to take their soft robotics experiments anywhere they go, encouraging exploration and creativity on the go.

Throughout the development of PneuBots, designer Hye Jun Youn collaborated with Ali Shtarbanov and Jooyoung Youn. Their combined expertise in design and engineering ensured that the kit was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

One of the challenges faced during the development of PneuBots was the smooth surface of the PVC film used for the modules. While it provided a sleek and polished look, it posed a challenge in terms of interaction with other objects. To address this, the team plans to incorporate a layer of cloth, such as an auxetic structure, to generate friction between modules for more stable mobility. They are also gathering data to determine the appropriate number of modular blocks to include in the basic package, aiming to provide users with a comprehensive and versatile kit.

PneuBots has already received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With PneuBots, the world of soft robotics becomes accessible to everyone. Whether you're an artist, designer, engineer, or maker, this modular construction kit allows you to unleash your creativity and explore the fascinating possibilities of soft robotics. Get ready to embark on a journey of shape-changing, interactive, and educational experiences with PneuBots.
